What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex set of symptoms associated with hormonal disorders in women of childbearing age, who also may be hereditary predisposed.

This particular syndrome affects about 10% of women, even in adolescence, and is a rather complicated ovarian disorder. Classical Medicine suggests various pharmacological treatments – but unfortunately, the results are not always the desired ones.

Although the symptoms are highly personalized, the search for Polycystic Ovaries often begins due to irregular menstrual cycles or amenorrhea. The diagnosis of the condition is made, when typical cysts are detected in the ovaries.

The clinical picture of the woman, often shows a disorder in hair growth, as well as the appearance of acne. Moreover, insulin resistance as a result of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, has obesity, diabetes, and hypercholesterolemia as clinical symptoms,  therefore an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Which are the long-term consequences of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

  • Infertility due to absence of ovulation
  • Increased risk of developing Type II Diabetes
  • High cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood
  • High blood pressure
  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
  • Endometrial Hyperplasia and Endometrial Cancer
  • Increased risk of developing ovarian cancer

How Medical Acupuncture Treats Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

Medical Acupuncture can be beneficial in treating this syndrome, giving very good results. According to a recent study by Sahlgrenska Academy  (University of Goethenburg, Sweden), published in the American Journal of Physiology, this Syndrome can be suppressed with the application of Acupuncture. “A combination of Electro-acupuncture (Acupuncture with electrical stimulation), moderate exercise, and special diet, helps reduce the effects of PCOS Syndrome,” said Elisavet Stener-Victorin, a researcher who conducted the study.

A common phenomenon in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, is the high activity of the Sympathetic Nervous System which -according to the researcher-, could actually be a cause of the Syndrome.  Acupuncture seems to treat it with very good results.

The specialized Physicians/Acupuncturists of our Institute, for a number of years, treat with great success the above two conditions. The treatment begins with a careful analysis and evaluation of both the laboratory and the clinical picture of the patient.
